Matthias Grabiak grew up in Germany and got his Ph.D. in theoretical physics in 1988 at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe Universität in Frankfurt. From 1989 through 1992 he was a post-doctoral researcher at the Nuclear Physics Group of the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory.
