Arthur A. Larson (October 6, 1941 – August 4, 2020) was an American computer engineer and author who, following his retirement, developed an independent hypothesis of Gravity. He proposed that gravity is a self-movement force arising from the exchange of gravitons and argued that this mechanism could serve as the basis for a reactionless interstellar propulsion system.
Biography
Larson was born on October 6, 1941, and grew up on a farm. He joined the United States Navy in 1959, serving as a sonarman aboard the destroyer escort USS Keppler (DDE-765) until 1962. After completing his naval service and attending electronics school, he joined Sperry Univac in 1966 as a computer engineer working overseas, based initially in Germany. Over the following years he advanced to become overseas engineering manager responsible for operations across much of the developing world, the Communist bloc, Europe, and North Africa. During his career he and his wife lived in South Africa, Korea, Hong Kong, and England.
In 1968 he married Vivien, a Scottish-born woman he met while working in Germany; the couple had no children. Larson retired in 1984 and purchased a small cow-calf farming operation in southwestern Minnesota, settling in Canby, Minnesota.
Larson died on August 4, 2020, at the age of 78, in Watertown, South Dakota.
Scientific contributions
Larson began writing on gravity and relativity in 1990. In May 1991 he formulated a hypothesis in which gravity between any two bodies is treated as a self-movement force resulting from the exchange of gravitons, rather than as a mutual attraction. Under this hypothesis he argued that Newton's law of gravitation should be modified from F = m1m2/d2 to F = 2(m1m2)/d2, and he contended that Einstein's general relativistic description of gravity as spacetime curvature was incorrect. He proposed a modified Cavendish gravitational-constant experiment as a means of testing the hypothesis.
Larson further suggested that, if correct, this "self-movement" gravity could be artificially redirected to provide a propulsion system requiring no reaction mass, which he termed "twisting gravity." He presented this idea at the 1998 Space Technology and Applications International Forum (STAIF) in a paper titled "Twisting Gravity: An Interstellar Propulsion System Utilizing a New Theory of Gravity," published in AIP Conference Proceedings (Volume 420, p. 1535). A later paper submitted for the STAIF-04 conference was withdrawn by the organizers before presentation. Larson's proposals lie outside the scientific mainstream and have not been accepted by the physics community.
