Harold Aspden (12 December 1927 – 9 July 2011) was a British theoretical physicist, electrical engineer, inventor and author. He spent much of his professional life as director of IBM's European patent operations, while pursuing an independent programme of theoretical physics. Aspden was an outspoken critic of Einstein's Theory of Relativity and proposed an alternative framework based on a dynamic Aether structured as a fluid crystal lattice permeating all space, which he presented as the energy source underlying quantum activity and the creation of matter. His ideas fall outside the scientific mainstream. He is the author of a number of books, most notably Physics without Einstein (1969; 2005), The Physics of Creation (2003) and Creation: The Physical Truth (2006), and of many papers published in both mainstream peer-reviewed journals (such as Physics Letters, Journal of Applied Physics, Lettere al Nuovo Cimento and Nature) and alternative non-mainstream journals (such as Hadronic Journal and Physics Essays).

Biography

Early life and education

Aspden was born on 12 December 1927 in Blackburn, Lancashire, England. He studied at the University of Manchester, where he received a B.Sc. in 1948, and then at Trinity College, Cambridge, where he was awarded a Ph.D. in 1953.

Career

Aspden made his career in patents, serving as the director in charge of IBM's European patent operations from the early 1960s until 1983. From 1983 to 1992 he was a Visiting Senior Research Fellow at the University of Southampton. He was a Fellow of the Institution of Electrical Engineers (F.I.E.E.), the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (F.I.Mech.E.) and the Institute of Physics (M.Inst.P.), and held the designations Chartered Engineer (C.Eng.) and Chartered Physicist (C.Phys.).

Aspden died on 9 July 2011, following a stroke that had led to several years of increasing dementia. After his death his widow, Wendy Aspden, made provision in her will for the establishment of the Aspden Professorship of Fundamental Physics in his memory at the University of Cambridge's Cavendish Laboratory.

Scientific contributions

Aspden's central claim was that space is not empty but is filled with a physically real, structured medium, or Aether, which he modelled as a fluid crystal lattice. He argued that this medium is the ultimate source of energy in the universe and that its dynamics regulate quantum behaviour, generate the inertial and gravitational properties of matter, and account for the creation of matter itself. From this starting point he developed theoretical treatments intended to derive fundamental physical constants, including the fine-structure constant, the proton-to-electron mass ratio and the gravitational constant, as well as the properties of particles such as the electron, muon, pion and proton.

On the basis of this aether model, Aspden rejected key elements of Einstein's special and general relativity, proposing instead what he described as a return to a classical, medium-based physics. He also worked extensively on questions of Gravity, Anti-Gravity and inertial propulsion, and on the possibility of extracting usable energy from the vacuum or aether, a field he associated with New Energy and "free energy" research. In this connection he investigated over-unity motor designs and held or co-held several patents, including work associated with the Adams-Aspden motor. Aspden's aether-based physics is not accepted within mainstream physics, which treats relativity and quantum field theory as well-established; his work is presented here as a description of his own theoretical position.
