Jaroslav Grigorievich Klyushin (also transliterated Yaroslav Klyushin; born April 1940 in Leningrad, Soviet Union) is a Russian physicist and mathematician based in St. Petersburg. He heads the Chair of Applied Mathematics at the St. Petersburg State University of Civil Aviation and serves as editor of Galilean Electrodynamics East (GED-East). He is known for his work on a generalization of Maxwell's equations and for a unified treatment of electrodynamics and gravitation that he terms "gravidynamics."
Biography
According to his own account, Klyushin was born in Leningrad in April 1940 into a family of the city's intelligentsia; his father worked as an engineer and later as a professor at the Radiotechnical Institute in Taganrog, and his mother was a singer at the Leningrad Opera. During the Second World War he was evacuated as a child and raised largely by his grandmother in the Ural region and later in Taganrog.
In 1957 he entered the Institute of International Relations in Moscow, studying in the Oriental Faculty. In 1962 he was arrested by the KGB in connection with student discussions he had organized on the democratization of the Soviet system. He subsequently turned to mathematics and physics, settling in St. Petersburg, where he became a professor of applied mathematics at the University of Civil Aviation.
Scientific contributions
Klyushin's principal research concerns a reformulation and extension of classical electromagnetic theory. He has proposed a generalization of Maxwell's equations together with a formula for a generalized electrodynamic (Lorentz-type) force, which he presents as his central results in electrodynamics. In his framework the electromagnetic field is treated as a field of velocities, while a parallel "gravidynamic" field—obtained by replacing first time derivatives with second ones in Maxwell-type equations—is treated as a field of accelerations, providing an intended connection between electricity and gravitation.
He summarizes this program in his 2009 monograph Fundamental Problems in Electrodynamics and Gravidynamics, which offers an alternative approach to relativity theory and quantum mechanics, and in his later book Electricity, Gravity, Heat – Another Look (2019). His positions lie outside mainstream physics and are associated with the alternative-science community, including the John Chappell Natural Philosophy Society.
Klyushin has organized and presided over international scientific congresses on space, time and gravitation held in St. Petersburg, and he edits the Galilean Electrodynamics East journal.
