Karin Westdyk is an American writer on environmental and energy subjects, best known within the new energy community for documenting the work of the hydrogen inventor Francisco Pacheco. She is a writer rather than a scientist, and her two pieces catalogued here are works of journalism — a magazine article and a book chapter — rather than technical papers.

Writing

Westdyk's account of Pacheco appeared in two places:

  • "US Patent Granted to West Milford Resident for Unique Hydrogen Energy Systems" (The Messenger: Environmental Health Journal, March/April 1992) — a report, from Pacheco's own New Jersey area, on the granting of his 1992 US patent.
  • "The Story of Francisco Pacheco and the Suppression of Hydrogen Technology" (1994) — a chapter in the anthology Suppressed Inventions and Other Discoveries, which frames Pacheco's device within that book's theme of technologies allegedly kept from the public.

Francisco Pacheco (a Bolivian-born inventor based at Hewitt, in the West Milford area of New Jersey) built and patented a "Bi-Polar Autoelectric Hydrogen Generator" — US Patent 3,892,653 (1975) and later US 5,089,107 (1992), with corresponding patents in Germany, Brazil and Japan. The device generates hydrogen from seawater using a galvanic cell: sacrificial magnesium and aluminium plates as the anode, stainless steel as the cathode, and seawater as the electrolyte, producing hydrogen both by electrolytic action at the cathode and by chemical reaction at the anode.

The demonstrations were real and are well attested. In July 1974 a 26-foot power boat was reported to have run for nine hours on hydrogen from the generator and seawater; in 1980 the CBS programme 60 Minutes filmed the device producing hydrogen that fuelled a torch cutting through a ¾-inch steel plate. It is these demonstrations, and the patents, that Westdyk documented and that the "suppression" narrative is built on.

Assessment

Westdyk's contribution is documentary: she recorded, accurately as far as can be checked, a genuine device and its public demonstrations. The generator worked — it really did make hydrogen — and the patents and the film footage are real. Her articles are a legitimate primary record of an episode in the history of alternative-energy claims.

The "suppression" reading is where care is needed, and the chemistry settles it. Pacheco's cell runs on sacrificial magnesium and aluminium electrodes. Both metals react with water to release hydrogen (Mg + 2H₂O → Mg(OH)₂ + H₂; 2Al + 6H₂O → 2Al(OH)₃ + 3H₂), and in seawater the galvanic action speeds this up. But the hydrogen comes from consuming the metal, not from the water for free: the device is, in effect, a metal fuel cell whose electrodes are used up and must be replaced.

This matters because producing magnesium and aluminium from their ores is extremely energy-intensive — smelting them takes far more energy than the hydrogen later yields. So the generator is not a net energy source and not "fuel from seawater" in the sense the suppression story implies; it is a way of storing, in refined metal, energy that was spent at the smelter, and releasing part of it as hydrogen. That it never displaced conventional fuel is explained by this energy accounting, not by concealment: no oil company needs to suppress a generator that runs on aluminium ingots more expensive than the fuel they replace.

None of which impugns Westdyk's reporting. The honest summary is that she documented a real and ingenious device whose physics is sound but unfavourable — a working demonstration of sacrificial-anode hydrogen production — and that the framing of its commercial failure as suppression reflects the theme of the book it appeared in more than the metallurgy of the cell.
