Martin Jakob Gander (born January 12, 1967) is a Swiss mathematician and full professor in the Section of Mathematics at the University of Geneva. He specializes in numerical analysis, particularly the numerical solution of partial differential equations, and is known for his research on domain decomposition methods, optimized Schwarz methods, waveform relaxation, and time-parallel algorithms. He has also written on the history of numerical mathematics, including the work of the Swiss physicist Walter Ritz and Ritzian relativity.

Biography

Gander was born on January 12, 1967. He studied mathematics at ETH Zurich, where he obtained his diploma, and continued his training at the École Polytechnique in Paris and at Stanford University. He received his doctorate from Stanford University in 1997 under the supervision of Andrew M. Stuart, with a dissertation titled Analysis of Parallel Algorithms for Time-Dependent Partial Differential Equations.

Following his doctorate, Gander held a professorship at McGill University in Montreal. In 2004 he joined the University of Geneva, where he is a full professor and leads the Numerical Analysis research group in the Section of Mathematics.

Work

Gander's research concentrates on the development and analysis of numerical algorithms for the solution of partial differential equations, with an emphasis on iterative methods, preconditioning, and high-performance and parallel computing. He is recognized for contributions to domain decomposition methods, including the introduction and analysis of optimized Schwarz methods, as well as to waveform relaxation and time-parallel ("parareal") algorithms.

He has also contributed to the history of computational and numerical mathematics, examining the origins of variational and direct methods in the work of David Hilbert and of Walter Ritz, whose 1902 Göttingen thesis is regarded as a foundation of modern computational methods. Gander has co-authored studies of Ritz's physics, including his electrodynamics and the emissionist ideas associated with Ritzian relativity.

He serves as a co-editor of the journal Computers & Mathematics with Applications.
