Paul E. Rowe is an American chemist who spent his career in industrial research on explosives, propellants and electronic materials, and who later became known for self-published work in dissident physics arguing for a revival of classical, ether-based physics. In his book An Attempt to Restore Classical Physics (2010) and in a series of conference abstracts he proposed that the vacuum is not empty but a concentrated matrix of protons and electrons, which he identified with the classical aether and with dark matter.

Biography

Rowe earned a Bachelor of Science in chemistry from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a doctorate in chemistry from Boston University. From 1953 to 1959 he was employed as Senior Chemist by the National Fireworks Company in Hanover, Massachusetts, where he worked with explosives and propellants. From 1959 to 1980 he was employed by Emerson & Cuming, Inc. in Canton, Massachusetts, where he was involved in research and development of plastic and ceramic materials for the electronics industry. Beginning in 1981 he worked as a consultant to various firms on electronics materials and microwave-absorbing materials while continuing his own private research. His industrial experience spanned the fields of explosives, propellants, dielectrics, magnetics and electromagnetics. Rowe was a resident of Mashpee, Massachusetts.

Scientific contributions

Rowe's later work fell outside the scientific mainstream and sought to replace special relativity and quantum descriptions of the vacuum with a revived classical, mechanical picture. On the basis of laboratory experiments and a survey of the earlier literature, he argued that the vacuum is not a void but a concentrated matrix of protons and unpaired electrons, possibly in the form of Bose–Einstein condensed hydrogen, which he equated with the aether of classical physics and with the dark matter sought by astronomers.

From these premises Rowe attempted to give unified, mechanical explanations of phenomena including magnetism, gravity, light, stellar aberration and Einstein's twin paradox. He reported that hydrogen gas could be produced from the vacuum under what he described as surprisingly mild conditions, a claim he associated with what he called the "Rowe Effect" and with the possibility of low-energy transmutation. These interpretations are not accepted within mainstream physics.
