Physics Before and After Einstein is a 2005 collection edited by Marco Mamone Capria and published by IOS Press, Amsterdam. It is a thirteen-chapter critical history of the physics of the twentieth century, assembled for the centenary of Einstein's 1905 papers and written, in the editor's framing, to supply "a critical appraisal which provides accurate historical and conceptual information" in place of celebration.
Its interest for this wiki lies in what it is not. It is neither a mainstream centenary tribute nor a collection of anti-Einstein polemic, but a volume in which established academic historians of physics and openly heterodox physicists appear between the same covers — and it was reviewed in Isis, the flagship journal of the History of Science Society. Volumes with that combination are rare, and it is worth understanding how this one was put together.

The volume's stance
The centre of gravity is critical historiography rather than dissent. Roberto de Andrade Martins (Campinas) and Klaus Hentschel (Stuttgart) are thoroughly mainstream historians of physics, as are Angelo Baracca and Seiya Abiko; Hentschel's "Testing Relativity" is a survey of the experimental record by the historian who has written most carefully about how those tests were actually received. Martins's opening chapter on Maxwell's ether recovers a nineteenth-century research programme that textbook accounts usually compress into a single dismissive sentence — a recovery that serves the dissident case without arguing it.
The heterodox weight sits in the last two chapters. Erasmo Recami surveys the theory and claimed observation of superluminal waves and objects, a subject he has pursued for four decades. Aubert Daigneault sets standard cosmology beside alternatives to it. Between them, Widom and Srivastava's chapter on quantum theory and gravitation and Bastos Filho's on the quantum debate from Einstein to Bell take positions that would be at home in Physics Essays.
The editor's own three chapters carry the historical argument. "General Relativity: Gravitation as Geometry and the Machian Programme" traces what became of Mach's principle once general relativity had absorbed and then quietly abandoned it; "The Rebirth of Cosmology" follows the passage from a static to an expanding universe and the assumptions taken on board in the course of it. Both are notably more sympathetic to the standard theories than the company might lead a reader to expect — a fair reflection of Mamone Capria's own position, which is that the arguments for relativity are frequently worse than the theory.

The volume was reviewed in Isis 98(2), 437 (2007). The reviewer's identity is behind the journal's paywall and is not recorded in the open metadata, so this page does not name them.
Mainstream uptake is documented for the editor's general-relativity chapter, which Jürgen Renn and Tilman Sauer cite in "Pathways out of Classical Physics", their contribution to The Genesis of General Relativity (Springer, 2007) — the Max Planck Institute's large-scale reconstruction of how Einstein arrived at the field equations, and about as mainstream a venue as the history of relativity has.
