Randy Powell is an American researcher and speaker associated with "Vortex Based Mathematics" (VBM), a numerological system of claims developed by Marko Rodin. Powell describes himself as a senior researcher on the Vortex Based Mathematics project and is best known for the concept he calls the "ABHA Torus" and for a 2010 TEDxCharlotte talk on the subject that was later withdrawn from the official TEDx video channel.
Biography
Powell became a student of the work of Marko Rodin, who is credited by proponents of the subject with identifying the repeating nine-digit pattern that they regard as the basis of Vortex Based Mathematics. Powell subsequently presented himself as a senior researcher and quality-control engineer for the Vortex Based Mathematics project, and has promoted the subject through public talks, interviews and podcast appearances.
Work
Powell asserts that by rendering Rodin's number sequence as a three-dimensional model he arrived at a toroidal, doughnut-shaped form, which he terms the ABHA Torus. He describes this as the completed engineering expression of Rodin's Vortex Based Mathematics, and claims it yields two-, three- and higher-dimensional models of what proponents call the Rodin Torus. Powell further asserts that the mathematics describes how energy expresses itself, that it contains no anomalies, and that the underlying shape and function of the universe is toroidal. Related claims by advocates concern a wound coil geometry known as the Rodin Coil, and Powell's associated "ABHA Coil", which its promoters link to proposals for novel energy devices.
These claims are not accepted within mainstream mathematics or physics, and have been characterised by mathematicians and science writers as numerology rather than mathematics.

Powell delivered a talk on Vortex Based Mathematics at TEDxCharlotte in 2010. The talk attracted criticism from mathematicians and science writers for a lack of scientific validity. According to a statement issued by TED, members of the TED and TEDx teams reviewed the talk, sought further advice from experts, and concluded that the criticisms had merit and were serious enough to warrant removal of the talk from the official TEDx YouTube channel under TED's content policy. TED stated that Powell was given several opportunities to defend his work directly but did not do so, and that in a telephone conversation on 12 September 2012 he said his brief onstage talk had not included complete data on his work. Copies of the recording have continued to circulate on video-sharing sites, often labelled as a "banned" TED talk.
Powell has also discussed Vortex Based Mathematics and the ABHA Torus in long-form radio and podcast interviews.
