Walter L. Rosenthal (June 11, 1931 – January 13, 2007), known as Walt, was an American electronics test engineer and measurement specialist. He spent most of his career working for defense contractors at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California, where he served on missile launch crews, including work in support of the Titan launch program at Space Launch Complex 4 (SLC-4). In his later years he became known within the alternative-energy community as an independent tester of claimed "new energy" and overunity devices.

Biography

Rosenthal spent more than 35 years employed by several defense contractors at Vandenberg Air Force Base, serving as a member of numerous missile launch crews. His professional work included support of the Titan launch program at Space Launch Complex 4 (SLC-4).

Outside of his defense work, Rosenthal maintained a private interest in the testing of energy machines. He assembled a collection of laboratory instrumentation manufactured by Yokogawa, Tektronix and Hewlett Packard, which he used to record voltage waveforms from DC to 50 MHz and current measurements of up to 1000 amps. He also designed and built special-purpose electronic circuits for inventors who lacked that expertise.

Rosenthal lived in Santa Maria, California. He died on January 13, 2007, of cardiomyopathy and heart failure. A memorial service was held in Santa Maria on January 27, 2007. He was survived by his wife of 51 years, Betty, and by three children, Duane, Scott and Gretchen, as well as eight grandchildren.

Scientific contributions

Rosenthal tested a large number of claimed energy devices at various locations, applying conventional electrical-measurement techniques to evaluate assertions of anomalous or overunity output. Within the new-energy community he was widely regarded as a careful and rigorous measurement authority; supporters credit him with identifying measurement errors that accounted for apparent gains in a number of devices he examined. Among the machines he is reported to have tested were electrical devices built by Earl Davenport (2003), and he traveled to Australia to evaluate claims associated with the Lutec technology.

Rosenthal is most often associated with the work of inventor Floyd Sweet on the so-called Vacuum Triode Amplifier (VTA), also described as the "Space Quanta Modulator." Rosenthal measured the device and authored an article and conference paper describing his observations. According to proponent Tom Bearden, Rosenthal also built a precision "control discharge" unit used by Sweet to condition, or "activate," the permanent magnets at the core of the device. Bearden and other supporters advanced various theoretical explanations for the device's claimed operation, including interpretations involving negative energy and vacuum energy; these explanations are not accepted within mainstream physics.

At a public presentation of Bearden's work, Rosenthal is quoted in Jeanne Manning's book The Coming Energy Revolution as stating that he had personally seen Floyd Sweet's machine operating: "It was running ... those small motors you saw in the video. It was jump-started with a nine-volt battery. There was no other electrical input required. ... There was no connection to the power line whatsoever," and that the device had no moving parts.

Following his death, physicist and new-energy writer Tom Bearden described him as "a courteous, kind, and very competent test scientist" who was "very instrumental in accurately measuring the results" reported by Sweet.
