Sauerbronn graduated in Mechanical Engineering from the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (PUC-Rio) in 1995. He earned a Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering from the same institution in 1998 and completed a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering there in 2002. He subsequently became an associate professor at the Escola Politécnica of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro.

Sauerbronn's professional experience in mechanical engineering emphasizes industrial automation and computer vision, including the design of programmable autonomous vehicles used in computer-vision studies.

Beginning in 2006, he took up research in basic physics, tracing the historical development of modern physics and taking an interest in the atomistic and kinetic traditions associated with figures such as Democritus and Lucretius and with the [[Georges-Louis Le Sage|Le Sage]]–Fatio theory of gravitation. Working from these ideas, he proposed a mechanical (kinetic) model of light in which the photon is treated as a spherical rigid body with a non-uniform mass distribution. He has used numerical simulation to test this model against experiments such as single-slit diffraction and the CIE 1931 (Guild) color experiment, seeking mechanical explanations for diffraction, colors, and quantum decay.
