Stone took his first degree in mathematics and his PhD in theoretical physics at the University of Oxford. From 1956 to 1975 he taught mathematics at universities in India, including St. Stephen's College at the University of Delhi. He is a Fellow of the Indian Association for the History and Philosophy of Sciences and led the development of the international standard ISO 15919 for the transliteration of Devanagari and related Indic scripts.<br />
