The idea has a long and respectable pedigree. Descartes explained planetary motion by vortices in a plenum; Helmholtz&amp;#039;s theorems on vortex motion in an ideal fluid led Lord Kelvin to propose in 1867 that atoms are &amp;#039;&amp;#039;&amp;#039;knotted vortex rings&amp;#039;&amp;#039;&amp;#039; in the aether, a theory pursued seriously by Tait and Thomson for two decades and abandoned only when the aether itself fell out of favour. Kelvin&amp;#039;s programme is the direct ancestor of both modern knot theory and the ring models collected under [[:Category:Toroidal Ring]].&lt;br /&gt;
