In the 1980s Schneiker proposed using the scanning tunneling microscope (STM) not merely as an imaging instrument but as a tool to manipulate individual atoms, an approach he termed &amp;quot;scanning tunneling engineering.&amp;quot; He described the STM as a realization of the atom-manipulating &amp;quot;Feynman machine&amp;quot; and, with anesthesiologist and consciousness researcher Stuart Hameroff, outlined multi-tip STM systems intended as &amp;quot;nanotechnology workstations.&amp;quot; His paper &amp;quot;Scanning tunnelling engineering&amp;quot; appeared in the &amp;#039;&amp;#039;Journal of Microscopy&amp;#039;&amp;#039; in 1988, and related material was published in the volume &amp;#039;&amp;#039;Molecular Electronics and Biocomputers&amp;#039;&amp;#039;. He collaborated with Hameroff on the book project &amp;#039;&amp;#039;Ultimate Computing&amp;#039;&amp;#039; and holds patents relating to tunneling transducers.&lt;br /&gt;
