In 1998 two independent teams measuring distant type Ia supernovae &amp;amp;mdash; treated as standard candles, since their intrinsic brightness is held to be uniform &amp;amp;mdash; found them dimmer than expected. Within the standard Friedmann&amp;amp;ndash;Lemaître&amp;amp;ndash;Robertson&amp;amp;ndash;Walker cosmology, dimmer means further away than the redshift implies, which means the expansion rate has increased over cosmic time. Since gravity should decelerate expansion, something must oppose it. The work was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2011.&lt;br /&gt;

The term introduced to supply this is Einstein&amp;#039;s cosmological constant Λ, reinterpreted as a uniform energy density of space itself, of order 10&amp;lt;sup&amp;gt;&amp;amp;minus;9&amp;lt;/sup&amp;gt; joules per cubic metre, with an equation of state close to &amp;#039;&amp;#039;w&amp;#039;&amp;#039; = &amp;amp;minus;1 &amp;amp;mdash; that is, possessing negative pressure. In general relativity pressure gravitates, so a sufficiently negative pressure produces repulsion. Supporting evidence is claimed from the cosmic microwave background and from baryon acoustic oscillations, both of which are, however, interpreted within the same cosmological model.&lt;br /&gt;

Two features of this account are conceded by its own proponents. First, nothing in physics predicts the observed value: quantum field theory&amp;#039;s estimate of the vacuum energy exceeds it by some 120 orders of magnitude, a discrepancy commonly described as the worst quantitative prediction in the history of science. The force of the objection lies in what the standard model asks of the term. Density is an amount of something per unit volume; pressure is exerted by something. To assign a density to space itself, and then to have that density push, is to attribute the properties of a substance to a quantity that was defined as a measure of what substances do. If energy is a descriptor of matter in motion, an &amp;quot;energy density of empty space&amp;quot; ascribes a property to the absence of the thing that bears it.&lt;br /&gt;
