Ash proposes that sub-atomic particles, and ultimately all matter, are best understood as vortices of energy rather than solid particles, an idea he traces back to the nineteenth-century vortex theories of Lord Kelvin. From this starting point he argues for the existence of further "levels" of matter vibrating at higher speeds, which he uses to offer physical explanations for reincarnation, life after death, miracles, telepathy and clairvoyance. These proposals lie outside the scientific mainstream and are presented as metaphysical or speculative rather than as accepted physics.<br />
