In a separate line of work Ramanujam sought to express the cosmological ideas of the Indian philosopher Vethathiri Maharishi in physical terms. In this framework space is treated as an all-pervading substance carrying potential energy, with a property of self-compression and surrounding pressure. Self-compression is said to produce spinning quanta of space (termed "formative dust"), whose spin and mutual pressure are used to account for gravity, mass and inertia. These proposals fall outside mainstream physics, which does not treat space as a compressible material substance of this kind.<br />
