Haralick&amp;#039;&amp;#039;&amp;#039; (born 1943) is an American computer scientist, Distinguished Professor of Computer Science at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York, and one of the founding figures of computer vision, pattern recognition and image analysis. Alongside a long and highly decorated mainstream academic career, he has since the mid-2010s pursued an independent experimental programme on the properties of water — including magnetically and frequency-treated water and what he terms &amp;#039;&amp;#039;subtle energy&amp;#039;&amp;#039; — which he has presented at the [[Tesla Tech]] ExtraOrdinary Technology Conference, at the Energy Science and Technology Conference, and at the Conference on the Physics, Chemistry and Biology of Water.&lt;br /&gt;

Haralick was born in 1943 in Brooklyn, New York. He studied at the University of Kansas, taking a B.A. in mathematics in 1964, a B.S. in electrical engineering in 1966 and an M.S. in electrical engineering in 1967. He completed his Ph.D. at the University of Kansas in 1969 and joined the faculty of its electrical engineering department, serving as professor there from 1975 to 1978.&lt;br /&gt;

In 1979 he moved to the electrical engineering department at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, where he was a professor and director of the Spatial Data Analysis Laboratory. From 1984 to 1986 he left academia to serve as vice president of research at Machine Vision International in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He then held the Boeing Clairmont Egtvedt Professorship in the department of electrical engineering at the University of Washington from 1986 through 2000, with adjunct appointments in the computer science and bioengineering departments.&lt;br /&gt;

In 2000 he accepted a Distinguished Professorship in the computer science department of the Graduate Center of the City University of New York, and in 2014 he was appointed Executive Officer of the Graduate Center&amp;#039;s Computer Science Ph.D. programme.&lt;br /&gt;

He is a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and a Fellow and past president (1996–1998) of the International Association for Pattern Recognition. In 2016 he received the King-Sun Fu Prize, the IAPR&amp;#039;s highest honour, cited for contributions in image analysis including remote sensing, texture analysis, mathematical morphology, consistent labeling and system performance evaluation.&lt;br /&gt;

Haralick began his research career as one of the principal investigators working on data from the NASA ERTS (Landsat) satellite programme, performing remote sensing image analysis with multi-channel spectral imagery and synthetic aperture radar imagery.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
He is best known for the &amp;#039;&amp;#039;Haralick texture features&amp;#039;&amp;#039;, introduced in 1973: a set of statistical descriptors computed from the spatial gray-tone co-occurrence matrix of an image. These features quantify properties such as contrast, correlation, entropy and homogeneity of local texture, and remain among the most widely used texture descriptors in the field. They have been applied to biological cell images, x-ray and medical images, satellite and aerial imagery, and images at a wide range of scales.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
His other major contributions include the &amp;#039;&amp;#039;facet model&amp;#039;&amp;#039; for image processing (treating the image as a piecewise-continuous surface, from which edge and topographic feature detection follow analytically), work in mathematical morphology and morphological algorithms, the &amp;#039;&amp;#039;consistent labeling&amp;#039;&amp;#039; formulation of constraint-satisfaction problems in vision, 3D pose estimation and inference of geometry from perspective projections, document image analysis and understanding, and the systematic performance characterization of vision algorithms — an insistence on treating computer vision algorithms as engineering artifacts whose error behaviour must be measured rather than assumed.&lt;br /&gt;

After more than five decades on university faculties, Haralick turned a substantial part of his experimental effort to the physics of water, working in a private laboratory of his own. This strand of his work is documented in his conference presentations, several of which are archived alongside his academic papers on his own website.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Haralick&amp;#039;s stated interest is in effects on water that conventional chemistry does not readily account for: changes produced by exposure to magnetic fields and to applied frequencies, the quantum-electrodynamic account of water as a two-phase medium containing &amp;#039;&amp;#039;coherence domains&amp;#039;&amp;#039;, ion cyclotron resonance effects in water under weak magnetic fields, and the question of whether conscious intention can produce measurable physical change in a water sample.&lt;br /&gt;

He defines subtle energy as &amp;quot;the energy and/or the change of the structure of space that occurs when influences such as conscious intention affects material reality,&amp;quot; and situates the topic alongside reported phenomena such as proximal and distant energy healing using Qi or Prana, and the programming of quartz crystals by intention. He has drawn on the theoretical framework of the physicist William A. Tiller, including Tiller&amp;#039;s notion of &amp;quot;raising the gauge&amp;quot; of a laboratory space, and has examined magnetic fields, electric fields, quartz crystals and geometric forms as possible generators of the effects he studies.&lt;br /&gt;

Characteristically for a researcher whose mainstream reputation rests on performance characterization, the emphasis of his presentations is methodological. In his 2018 talk &amp;#039;&amp;#039;Conscious Intention, Water &amp;amp; Subtle Energy&amp;#039;&amp;#039; he set out the instrumentation and protocol he uses to measure the electrical impedance of a water sample — presenting results as impedance graphs and Smith charts — comparing control water against water subjected to intention, on the argument that intention alters how well the water accepts or rejects the signal from the analyzer. He gives particular attention to the difficulty of designing protocols in this area, to the ways an experimenter can influence his own experiment, and to procedures for clearing such influence in order to obtain cleaner results. He has also used boiling-point measurements to compare commercially marketed &amp;quot;structured&amp;quot; waters.&lt;br /&gt;
