Thomas P. Van Doren is an American electrical engineer and professor emeritus of electrical and computer engineering at the Missouri University of Science and Technology (formerly the University of Missouri–Rolla) in Rolla, Missouri. He is widely recognized for his applied research and technical training in electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), the reduction of electrical noise, and the grounding and shielding of electronic systems.

Biography

Van Doren earned all three of his degrees from the University of Missouri–Rolla, receiving a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering (BSEE) in 1962, a Master of Science in Electrical Engineering (MSEE) in 1963, and a Ph.D. in 1969.

From 1963 to 1965 he served as a commissioned officer in the U.S. Army Security Agency, followed by service in the U.S. Army Reserves from 1965 to 1971.

He spent his entire academic career at the University of Missouri–Rolla, which later became the Missouri University of Science and Technology. He served as an instructor from 1967 to 1969, assistant professor from 1969 to 1977, associate professor from 1977 to 1982, and professor from 1982 onward. He was named Teledyne Professor of Electrical Engineering from 1986 to 1990, and later became professor emeritus, remaining affiliated with the university's Electromagnetic Compatibility Laboratory.

Work

Van Doren specializes in electromagnetic compatibility, the reduction of electrical noise, and the grounding and shielding of electronic systems. He created the first EMC course offered at Missouri S&T and developed short courses on grounding and shielding of electronic systems and on circuit board layout to reduce noise emission. Over the course of his career he taught these short courses to more than 19,000 engineers and technicians and consulted extensively on electrical noise problems.
