Edgar Paternina is a retired electrical engineer known for an alternative framework in physics that he calls the "Principle of Synergy," published under the pen name Epsilon Pi. He is listed in The Worldwide List of Dissident Scientists.

Ideas

Paternina proposes what he terms the Principle of Synergy and a "Basic Unit System" (BUS) intended to reconcile the quantitative and qualitative aspects of science and to bridge the divergence between "part" and "whole." He uses a complex-number representation based on Euler's relation to define a "Holon," a unit he describes as remaining invariant under certain mathematical operations. In several preprints he explores whether this basic unit can be modeled as a string and argues for reformulating the fundamental equations of physics using new metrics for space and time.

He set out these ideas in the book Physics and the Principle of Synergy (1999, published as Epsilon Pi) and in preprints posted to arXiv. He is also a critic of Big Bang cosmology. His proposals are not part of mainstream physics.
