Jose Antonio Lopez Cruz Abeyro (also written José Antonio López Cruz-Abeyro) is a Mexican geophysicist and space physicist. He is a researcher at the Centro de Geociencias of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM), based at the Campus Juriquilla in Querétaro, where he has been responsible for the institution's geomagnetism observatory.
Biography
Lopez Cruz Abeyro is based in Querétaro, Mexico, and carries out his academic and research work at the Centro de Geociencias of UNAM, Campus Juriquilla. Over the course of his career he has also collaborated with other Mexican geoscience institutions, including work associated with the Universidad Autónoma de Baja California. He has served as the person responsible for the geomagnetism observatory at the Centro de Geociencias.
Work
Lopez Cruz Abeyro's research concerns geophysics, geomagnetism and space physics. His studies address Sun-Earth relationships, the magnetosphere and magnetospheric current systems, ultra-low-frequency (ULF) geomagnetic waves, and magnetoseismic relationships, together with instrumentation and techniques for the analysis of magnetic-field data.
A central theme of his work is the investigation of geomagnetic anomalies that may be associated with seismic and volcanic activity. He has analyzed ULF geomagnetic signals recorded at the Teoloyucan geomagnetic station in central Mexico in relation to regional seismicity, and has studied ULF geomagnetic anomalies observed at the Tlamacas station near the Popocatépetl volcano. His research has also included experimental studies of anomalous radon activity in the Popocatépetl area as a tool for examining lithosphere-atmosphere coupling relevant to the forecasting of volcanic and seismic events.
In addition, he has contributed to studies of the ionosphere over the Mexican region, including total electron content (TEC) behavior and disturbances associated with major geomagnetic storms, as well as to observations connected with space-weather monitoring.
