Amrit Sorli, in full Amrit Srečko Šorli, is a Slovenian researcher in the foundations of physics, cosmology and the epistemology of science. He is best known for the position that time is not a physical dimension but the numerical order of material change, and for developing what he calls bijective physics — the requirement that every element of a physical model correspond to exactly one element of physical reality. He is the founder of the Bijective Physics Institute and works outside the mainstream academic physics establishment, publishing prolifically in independent and alternative-foundations journals.

Biography

Šorli obtained an engineering degree in geodesy in 1980 from the University of Ljubljana, Slovenia, and afterwards pursued independent study in physics, cosmology, psychology and philosophy.

In 2000 he co-founded the SpaceLife Institute together with the Italian physicist Davide Fiscaletti, a long-term collaborator with whom he has co-authored a large share of his papers and at least one book. In 2013 he founded the Foundations of Physics Institute (FOPI), whose principal research subject was the dynamic quantum vacuum. That institute was subsequently reorganised as the Bijective Physics Institute (BPI) in Slovenia, which he founded and which he runs together with Davide Fiscaletti and Rado Gorjup. The institute's stated aim is research into the foundations of physics and cosmology using a bijective research methodology, and the development of a cosmological model based on astronomical observation rather than on theoretical postulates such as those of Big Bang cosmology.

Šorli has published on the order of one hundred articles in physics journals and has written about ten books, chiefly on the foundations and epistemology of physics. His work has appeared in journals including Foundations of Physics, Foundations of Science, Quantum Studies: Mathematics and Foundations, Physics Essays, the Ukrainian Journal of Physics, American Journal of Modern Physics, NeuroQuantology and Reports in Advances of Physical Sciences. His ORCID identifier is 0000-0001-6711-4844.

Scientific contributions

Time is not a physical dimension

The central and most widely reported of Šorli's claims is that time is not a fourth dimension of space and has no independent physical existence. On his account, what clocks actually measure is the numerical order of material change — that is, of motion in three-dimensional space. Change runs in space only; the universe is fundamentally time-invariant, existing in a permanent "now". Duration, in this view, is not a property of the world but something that enters existence when an observer measures it: no measurement, no time.

From this it follows that time has no arrow, since it does not point in any direction, and that the "arrow of time" is a mathematical rather than a physical construct. Šorli and Fiscaletti have argued that the results of special relativity are sound but that the introduction of four-dimensional Minkowski spacetime produced a century-long misinterpretation of time as a physical dimension, a reading which they say lacks direct experimental support. The same argument leads him to reject time travel and time-symmetric models of physics as physically meaningless, and to treat linear past–present–future time as a structure of the observing mind rather than of the external world.

Šorli has applied the timeless picture to concrete problems: he has argued that replacing time with the numerical order of material change dissolves Zeno's paradoxes of motion, and has reanalysed the relative rate of clocks in the GPS system in terms of the physical properties of space rather than of relative motion in spacetime.

Bijective epistemology and bijective physics

Šorli's methodological programme, set out in his books and in the work of the Bijective Physics Institute, is that scientific models should satisfy a bijective function in the set-theoretic sense: each element of the mathematical model must correspond to exactly one element of the physical world, and vice versa. Elements of a formalism that have no counterpart in physical reality — he counts time as a dimension among them — are regarded as artefacts of the mathematics rather than as discoveries about nature. This is offered as a general criterion for distinguishing physically meaningful theory from mathematical construction, and as a corrective to what he sees as the drift of theoretical physics into unphysical formalism.

Superfluid quantum space, gravity and cosmology

In place of spacetime, Šorli proposes a superfluid quantum space (also described as a dynamic or three-dimensional quantum vacuum) of Planck-scale energy density as the fundamental arena of the universe. The presence of a massive object diminishes the energy density of space in its vicinity; mass, gravity and quantum behaviour are all understood as consequences of this variable energy density rather than of geometric curvature. In this framework the curvature of general relativity is reinterpreted as a variation in the energy density of the quantum vacuum, and Newton's dynamic ether is in effect restored in a modern form. He has also related the speed of light and the value of the gravitational constant to the energy density of intergalactic space.

Cosmologically, Šorli advocates a stationary, eternal universe in dynamic equilibrium rather than an expanding universe originating in a Big Bang, describing his approach as evidence-based cosmology grounded in astronomical observation. In this picture black holes act as "rejuvenating systems of the universe", recycling matter rather than terminating in singularities; he has argued at length against the physical reality of gravitational singularities at the centres of black holes and has offered an alternative account of relativistic jets from active galactic nuclei. He has further extended the programme toward "bio-cosmology", the integration of life and consciousness into the cosmological model, and toward consciousness research more generally, including experiential methodology in the study of the observer.
