Alfred O'Rahilly (1 October 1884 – 1 August 1969) was an Irish mathematical physicist, Professor of Mathematical Physics and later President of University College Cork, a politician and public intellectual, and in his final years a Catholic priest and Monsignor. He is remembered in the dissident physics tradition above all for Electromagnetics: A Discussion of Fundamentals (1938), an 884-page critical re-examination of the foundations of electromagnetic theory which rejected the primacy of the Maxwellian field, disputed the standard derivation and status of the Lorentz force, and argued that the emission electrodynamics of Walter Ritz was at least as successful as the accepted theory. Reprinted by Dover as Electromagnetic Theory: A Critical Examination of Fundamentals, the book remains an essential part of the dissident's library and a standard reference for critics of Maxwellian electrodynamics and of Special Relativity.
Biography
O'Rahilly was born in Listowel, County Kerry, Ireland, the son of Thomas Francis Rahilly and Julia Mary Rahilly (née Curry). He was educated at St Michael's College, Listowel, and at Blackrock College in Dublin. He took his degrees in mathematical physics at University College, Cork (BA 1907, MA 1908), studied scholastic philosophy at Stonyhurst College in Lancashire, and returned to UCC for a BSc in 1912. He entered the Society of Jesus but left before ordination. A doctorate followed from the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome in 1919.
He was appointed assistant lecturer in the Department of Mathematics and Mathematical Physics at UCC in 1914, and was made full Professor of Mathematical Physics in 1917. He became Registrar of the college in 1920, holding that office until 1943, when he became President of University College Cork, a position he held until his retirement in 1954. He founded the Cork University Press in 1925, which was transferred to the college in 1928. As President he founded the Department of Electrical Engineering, instituted student health and restaurant services, acquired the site of the former County Gaol for campus expansion, and established a diploma in Social Science. He was a strong advocate of adult and workers' education, initiating workers' education courses in the late 1940s that proved popular with Cork trade unionists; he taught economics and sociology in them himself alongside his physics.
O'Rahilly was also active in Irish public life. Elected to Cork City Council, he was arrested early in 1921 for his political writings on behalf of the Irish cause and interned on Spike Island until his release in October of that year. He then served as a constitutional adviser to the Irish Treaty delegation. He supported the Anglo-Irish Treaty, and in 1922 composed a draft constitution for the Irish Free State with Darrell Figgis. Standing for Cumann na nGaedheal in Cork Borough, he was elected to the 4th Dáil in 1923 but resigned his seat in 1924. He led Irish delegations to International Labour Organization conferences in 1924, 1925 and 1932.
A deeply religious Catholic throughout his life, and the author of numerous works of theology, apologetics and social thought, O'Rahilly married Agnes O'Donoghue in 1916. After her death in 1953 and his retirement from UCC he went to reside at Blackrock College, where he was ordained a priest on 18 December 1955; he was made a domestic prelate (Monsignor) in 1960. Pope Pius XII conferred on him the Pontifical Order of Saint Gregory the Great in 1954. He received an honorary DLitt from UCC in 1939 and a DSc from the National University of Ireland in 1940 for his work on electromagnetics. His brother T. F. O'Rahilly was a distinguished Celtic scholar and his sister Cecile O'Rahilly an editor of the Táin Bó Cúailnge. The O'Rahilly Building at UCC is named in his honour.
Scientific contributions
Electromagnetics: A Discussion of Fundamentals (1938)
O'Rahilly's major scientific work, Electromagnetics: a Discussion of Fundamentals (Longmans, Green & Co. and Cork University Press, 1938, xii + 884 pp.), was described by its author as an "essay in constructive criticism." Its purpose was not to propose a finished replacement theory but to subject accepted electromagnetic theory to a careful reading of the standard texts and original memoirs, to expose the inadequacies and inconsistencies he found there, and to set out guidelines for a reconstruction of the subject. The book is exceptionally thoroughly documented, ranging over a century of primary electromagnetic literature, and is valued as a critical history of the field as well as a polemic against it.
Rejection of the Maxwellian field
Following the French physicist, historian and philosopher of science Pierre Duhem, O'Rahilly rejected Maxwell's field account of electromagnetism — the dominant British theory — as the correct fundamental description. He denied the conceptual priority of the electric and magnetic fields, treating them not as physically primitive entities but as mathematical constructs derived from the interaction of charges. Among the specific notions he attacked was Maxwell's displacement current, in place of which he argued for the proposals of Ludvig Lorenz and Riemann, and he pressed the claims of the earlier action-at-a-distance and retarded-action traditions of Gauss, Weber, Riemann and Ritz against the field-theoretic orthodoxy that had displaced them.
The force law: Liénard, Schwarzschild and Ritz
In place of the field-based formulation, O'Rahilly made a sustained case for the Liénard–Schwarzschild force formula as the true synthetic statement of accepted electromagnetic theory, showing that the content of the standard theory can be expressed as a force law between charges published by Liénard in 1898. Having established this, he then argued that the alternative force formula proposed by Walter Ritz in 1908 is equally successful — and in his judgement more successful — in accounting for the experimental evidence. Because Ritz's formulation is derived phenomenologically, it reduces to Coulomb's law and Ampère's law but differs from the Liénard–Wiechert potentials of the received theory, so that the two are in principle distinguishable rather than being mere notational variants. This treatment of the force law also included O'Rahilly's well-known historical correction concerning the misattribution of results between Ludvig Lorenz and H. A. Lorentz, notably in the case of the gauge condition and the retarded potentials.
Critique of relativity
O'Rahilly's rejection of Einsteinian relativity followed as a logical consequence of his rejection of the Maxwell–Lorentz field theory. If the field is not fundamental, and if an emission or ballistic electrodynamics in the manner of Ritz can reproduce the phenomena, then the chief motivation for the relativistic reinterpretation of space and time falls away. He subjected Lorentz's notion of "local time" to particular criticism, and directed further critical attention to the work of Heaviside, Kelvin, Einstein, Minkowski, J. J. Thomson, Hertz, Poynting and Weyl. He embraced Ritz's ballistic theory of light as the more physically intelligible alternative. Throughout, his method was to insist on the actual meaning of the symbols used in physical formulae — including a careful discussion of units and dimensions — rather than to accept a formalism whose interpretation had, in his view, never been properly settled.
Reception
The book was controversial from the outset, but was taken seriously by leading figures. E. T. Whittaker judged that it "contains an enormous amount of critical material of the highest value" and showed "the author's acute mind and vast learning," while P. W. Bridgman wrote that "the book is well worth studying even if merely for the sake of awakening consciousness of the many doubtful and unsettled places still remaining in the structure of electrodynamics." It was reviewed by H. Bateman in Science in 1939 and in Nature the same year. Dover Publications reprinted it, unabridged and corrected, as a two-volume set under the title Electromagnetic Theory: A Critical Examination of Fundamentals (1965), which kept the work in circulation and made it accessible to the generation of critics of relativity and of Maxwellian electrodynamics who followed.
