Abstract
The derivation of the "free particle" Schrödinger equation, based on an analogy between transverse motion of a string surrounded by a viscous medium and massless field propagation in such a medium, is presented It is found that the Schrödinger equation corresponds to an approximate field equation in which frictional forces dominate.
