Mark L. LeClair is an American mechanical engineer and inventor, and the founder, president and chief executive officer of NanoSpire, Inc. He is known for his research on cavitation and for claims, presented outside the scientific mainstream, that collapsing cavitation bubbles can trigger nuclear fusion, fission and large-scale elemental transmutation in water through what he terms the "LeClair Effect".

Biography

LeClair earned a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering, with honors, in 1983 and a Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering in 1988, both from Worcester Polytechnic Institute. In January 2002 he co-founded NanoSpire, Inc. with Serge Lebid as an intellectual-property holding company intended to commercialize cavitation reentrant jet-based tools and processes. He serves as the company's president and chief executive officer, with Lebid as executive vice president. LeClair resides in Gorham, Maine.

Work

LeClair's research centers on the reentrant micro-jets produced when cavitation bubbles collapse. Through NanoSpire he has described using these jets as a machine tool capable of cutting, drilling, welding, hammering and annealing materials at the nanometer scale, with proposed applications in micro- and nano-fabrication, photovoltaics, microsurgery, targeted drug delivery and algae-oil extraction for biodiesel.

In February 2004, while investigating cavitation machining under Maine Technology Institute grants, LeClair reported the discovery of a crystalline form of water produced by cavitation, describing faceted jets that carried a large electrostatic charge. He and Lebid subsequently claimed that a scaled-up cavitation reactor, first built and tested in March 2007 and further tested in 2009, triggered nuclear fusion, fission and elemental transmutation using ordinary water. According to their reports, experiments conducted in August 2009 produced roughly 2,900 watts of thermal output from 840 watts of electrical input, a coefficient of performance they cited as evidence of a zero-point-energy-based effect.

These claims of cavitation-induced fusion and transmutation have not been reproduced or accepted by the mainstream scientific community and lie outside established physics. LeClair holds several U.S. patents relating to controlled cavitation bubble formation, including US7297288 and US7517430.
