Ricardo Libertario Carezani (April 11, 1921 – 2016) was an Argentine-American physicist and the originator of Autodynamics (AD), an alternative theory of relativistic mechanics that he proposed as a replacement for Einstein's special and general relativity.

Biography

Carezani was born on April 11, 1921 in Córdoba, Argentina. He entered Tucumán University in 1939 to study electro-mechanical engineering, and from the outset regarded Einstein's Special Theory of Relativity as ill-founded. Around 1940 he came to believe that the "two observers in relative motion" postulate underlying special relativity was redundant; removing that redundancy, he argued, left a theory in which a single observer describes a phenomenon in its own coordinate system. By about 1945, at the age of 24, he considered the foundations of Autodynamics complete, and in 1947 he received his doctorate in physics from Tucumán University.

In 1951 Carezani published his first book on Autodynamics, which he said was immediately blacklisted by Argentina's National Atomic Energy Commission; only about 300 copies were printed. In August 1954 the Buenos Aires daily Crítica (which ceased publication in 1963) published an account of his theory; Carezani recounted that the paper's publisher was warned not to print anything further by him or face being shut down. He attributed the long delay in developing and publicising Autodynamics to this political climate — his struggle, as he put it, was waged against Perón on one side and the Einstein "myth" on the other.

After Argentina's political reopening, Carezani emigrated to the United States around 1979–1981, settling in California, where he worked as a mathematician and physicist. In 1982 he authored an accelerator experiment at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center intended to test Autodynamics against special relativity; the results, published in Physical Review A in 1984, agreed with mainstream physics rather than with his predictions, and Carezani subsequently modified the theory to include an accelerator-specific effect.

In 1994 the Society for the Advancement of Autodynamics (SAA) was founded by his supporter David de Hilster, together with Carezani and Amnon Meyers, to promote the theory; the society, which later had a chapter in the United Kingdom, maintains a website at autodynamics.org. In June 2015 a paid advertisement promoting Autodynamics, placed by the SAA, appeared in the Science Times section of The New York Times and drew a critical response in Physics Today (see Autodynamics). Carezani lived and worked in Long Beach, California, and died in 2016.

Autodynamics

Carezani's Autodynamics holds that removing the redundant reference frame from the Lorentz derivation (the Carezani Frame Reduction) yields equations that do not diverge at the speed of light and require no relativistic mass increase. Among the results claimed for the theory are nucleus–nucleus collisions without the neutrino, a derivation of Bohr's atomic equations without wave equations, a revised Compton Effect equation, and a particle-based ("pico-gravity") mechanism of gravitation said to explain the perihelion advance of all bodies, the apparent Pioneer slowdown, the Allais anomaly, and lunar distancing.
