He served in the United States Army for 31 years and afterward worked for AT&T. A longtime resident of Berea, Kentucky, he was a member of Viney Fork Baptist Church, where he taught Sunday school for more than 30 years. He belonged to the Mensa Society and to the Masonic lodge, and his interests included checkers, chess, and karate.
 
Brattin died on October 5, 2022, at the Hospice Compassionate Care Center in Richmond, Kentucky, at the age of 89.
