Stephen Hawking Smoked My Socks: How Beliefs Contaminate Our Opinions — An Astrophysicist's Perspective is a 2014 book by the South African astrophysicist Hilton Ratcliffe, published by the U.S.-based Muse Harbor Publishing in November 2014.
The book asks why a handful of scientists — Stephen Hawking and Albert Einstein foremost among them — become world-famous figures, and argues that their fame has little to do with the substance of their science. Ratcliffe uses this as a starting point to examine how belief shapes and "contaminates" opinion, the tension between belief and instinct in forming a worldview, and what he characterises as the suffocating control that scientific orthodoxy exercises over dissenting ideas. It continues the sceptical, anti-consensus themes of his earlier books The Virtue of Heresy: Confessions of a Dissident Astronomer and The Static Universe: Exploding the Myth of Cosmic Expansion.
