Richard Banduric is an American software and electronics engineer and independent researcher based in Aurora, Colorado. He is the founder and chief executive of Field Propulsion Technologies Inc. (formerly Displacement Field Technologies Inc.), through which he develops a reformulated theory of relativistic electrodynamics and proposes its application to propellant-less spacecraft propulsion.

Biography

Banduric has worked for several decades as an engineer in the aerospace and defense industries. He has been employed as an embedded software engineer at Lockheed Martin, contributed flight software as part of the Europa Clipper mission team at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, and worked as a senior software development engineer at United Launch Alliance. Alongside this career he pursued independent research in electromagnetism, founding Displacement Field Technologies Inc. and later Field Propulsion Technologies Inc. to develop and prototype his ideas.

Work

Banduric's theoretical work, which he calls "New Electrodynamics," presents a mathematical description of how electric fields change as a result of relative motion between charges. He bases the formulation on James Clerk Maxwell's original quaternion (bi-quaternion) treatment of electromagnetism and argues that the intensity of an electric field differs when observed from different inertial reference frames because of the Lorentz contraction of moving electric charges.

From this framework Banduric proposes that electrically isolated charged elements in relative motion can experience unequal forces from the same field interaction, a result he describes as "breaking Green's Reciprocity." He applies the idea to a proposed "Static Displacement Field Drive," a device intended to generate thrust from the differences in relativistic electric fields of charged elements in relative motion, without expelling reaction mass. His claims fall outside the mainstream scientific consensus on electrodynamics and propulsion.

Banduric and his company received a Phase I grant from the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) to model, simulate and validate the proposed propulsion concept. He holds several United States patents relating to the use of complex and static electric fields to effect motion, including U.S. Patents 9,337,752, 10,072,642, 10,084,395 and 10,320,312.
