Ionel Dinu (born 1 June 1972) is a Romanian physicist, physics teacher and experimentalist, best known for his underwater experiments with rotating disks and cylinders, which demonstrate a purely mechanical model for magnetic attraction and repulsion.
Dinu's programme is to show that the forces normally attributed to fields acting across empty space are in fact fluid-mechanical effects in a liquid aether: that electrostatic and gravitational attraction correspond to Bjerknes forces, and that magnetic attraction and repulsion occur between vortices. His experiments are offered as the demonstration that action apparently at a distance is in every case transmitted through the intervening liquid.
His rotating-cylinder result was adopted by Robert de Hilster and David de Hilster as the experimental basis for the magnetic component of the Four Universal Motions, where it is named the "Dinu effect" — a name coined by David de Hilster in Principia Mathematica 2.
The underwater experiments
The experiments are simple enough to be shown on video and are the reason Dinu is cited elsewhere on this wiki. Cylinders (and in other runs, disks) are set rotating while submerged in water, and their mutual behaviour is observed.
The result is that rotating cylinders in water attract or repel one another in the same pattern as permanent magnets:
- Opposite directions of rotation → attraction. The flows between the two cylinders reinforce one another and the cylinders move together.
- Same direction of rotation → repulsion. The opposing flows between them create a disturbance that forces the cylinders apart.
No magnets, charges or fields are involved: the entire effect is produced by circulation in the surrounding fluid. Dinu's argument is that if a rotating body in a liquid reproduces magnetic behaviour without any magnetic field, then a magnetic field may itself be circulation — vortex motion — in a liquid aether, and the apparent action at a distance is simply the fluid between the bodies doing the work. He has supported the physical experiments with computational fluid dynamics simulations.
The same reasoning is extended to the other forces. Electrostatic and gravitational attraction are attributed to Bjerknes forces, the well-established fluid-mechanical attraction and repulsion between bodies pulsating in a fluid — a real effect in ordinary hydrodynamics, which Dinu proposes as the aetherial analogue for those forces.
Reception on this wiki
The de Hilsters incorporated the result directly into The Four Universal Motions in Physics, in which magnetism is orbiting motion: particles caught in orbits constitute a magnetic field, with opposite rotations attracting and like rotations repelling — precisely the pattern Dinu observed underwater. Dinu is credited there with describing magnetic motion in 2006, and his video is cited as the demonstration behind it.
The picture also converges with other aether work documented here, notably Glenn Borchardt and Stephen J Puetz's Neomechanical Gravitation Theory, in which vortex motion in the aether and aether pressure gradients replace attraction with a push.
Scientific Work
Published original studies on gravitation, inertia, electrodynamics, optics. Found the explanation of Oersted effect (1) and the origin of Ampere's force (1,3), explained the nature of gravitation (2), explained the origin of inertia as a hydrodynamical effect in the aether (4), cleared the significance and the meaning of mass as the quantity of matter in an object and found that it should be expressed in units of volume (4), proposed a return to a picture of light as a longitudinal wave of compression in the liquid aether (5). Proposed the replacement of the term "polarized light" with the term "light beam in a Huygens state" because the former is a misnomer as even the mainstream science does not recognize the existence of any poles in a beam of light.

The most recent achievement is the conjecture (6) that the photoelectric effect is a Faraday effect of electromagnetic induction occurring at the surface of the illuminated metal.

Current Interests and Activities
i) performing experiments with the aim of showing that the electrostatic, magnetic and gravitational attractions and repulsions are in fact fluid mechanical effects in the liquid aether: electrostatic and gravitational forces correspond to Bjerknes forces in the aether and the magnetic attractions and repulsions occur between vortices in the aether. ii) developing a theory of light as a longitudinal wave of compression in the liquid aether; accounting for the optical phenomena discovered by Malus and those of double refraction in a manner consistent with the picture of light as a longitudinal wave of compression in the liquid aether;
iii) developing a theory of the refractive index of glasses;
iv) developing a new atomic theory that accounts for the atomic spectral lines of emission in terms of the normal modes of mechanical vibration of atoms viewed as solid structures existing in the liquid aether.
