Gary Doskas is an electrical engineer and independent researcher known for his self-taught investigations into geometry, in particular the harmonic relationships between circles, cones, spheres and the Platonic solids. He is the author of the Spherical Harmony series of books.
Biography
Doskas graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from Concordia University in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, in 1984. He subsequently spent some 27 years working in the semiconductor industry. Beginning in April 2010 he took up the self-taught study of structural shapes within a spherical geometric context, an interest that led to his first published work in January 2011.
Work
Doskas's research concerns what he calls spherical harmony: the geometric relationships that arise when conic sections and circles are inscribed on a sphere. His approach is deliberately non-analytical, being founded on pure geometric construction carried out with nothing more than a compass, so that the results can be reproduced by readers without advanced mathematical training. Among the concepts he develops are harmonic notes and chords, fractional harmonics and their associated polygrams (star polygons), polyspherons, and the expansion phases relating these figures to the Platonic solids.
He has also presented this material publicly, under titles such as "Spherical Harmony: A Journey of Geometric Discovery — The Harmonic Relationship of Circles, Cones and Spheres."
