David Heskin is an American visionary and traditional artist known for his oil, egg tempera, and mischtechnik paintings and for his carvings in stone and wood. Working across a range of styles and mediums, he creates handcrafted, often geometric works, and together with his artistic partner Aloria Weaver teaches technique-driven painting courses internationally. Heskin and Weaver presented on the meeting of art and science at the second annual Electric Universe conference.
Biography
Heskin began oil painting in 1995 and worked for many years as a largely self-guided artist before seeking formal training in a wide variety of traditional painting techniques. He completed professional artist apprenticeships in Colorado and Minnesota (1998–99) and studied figurative painting at the Seattle Academy of Fine Art (2003). He went on to study mischtechnik (combined egg tempera and oil) painting in Italy (2010), the sight-size technique at the Loveland Atelier (2014–15), egg tempera icon painting and gilding with Fred Wessel (2015), and alla prima portraiture and landscape painting (2016). In 2020 he earned a Master's degree in Traditional Arts from The Prince's Foundation School of Traditional Arts, with an emphasis on handcrafted, geometric works in diverse mediums.
Heskin has worked as a professional artist since 1998 and as an independent painting instructor since 2011. He was an instructor at the Vienna Academy of Visionary Art (2013–16) and is co-owner and creative director of the Luminous Flux Gallery, founded in 2014. In a long-term collaboration with his art and life partner, the artist Aloria Weaver, he develops and teaches international painting intensives on traditional and innovative techniques.
Work
Heskin's work spans oil and egg tempera painting, mischtechnik painting, and carving in stone and wood, combining traditional methods with innovation. He describes his aspiration as creating artifacts and visual experiences that are otherwise unavailable to the human eye and that speak to the journey of the soul. His bodies of work include the series Alchemical Icons, Luminaries, Prismata, Telepathine Seraphim, Infierno•Invierno, and Subvert the Dominant Parallelogram. His artwork has been exhibited in museums, galleries, cultural centers, theaters, and private collections across North America, Europe, and beyond.
Heskin and Aloria Weaver were featured presenters at the second annual Electric Universe conference in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where their presentation addressed the meeting of art and science.
