Louis Victor Pierre Raymond, 7th duc de Broglie (15 August 1892 – 19 March 1987) was a French theoretical physicist who, in his 1924 doctoral thesis, proposed that all matter has wave properties — the de Broglie hypothesis, which established wave–particle duality as a central feature of quantum theory. After the wave behaviour of electrons was confirmed experimentally in 1927, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1929.

De Broglie is of particular interest to the critical-thinkers community documented on this wiki because of his lifelong search for a causal, physically intelligible account of quantum mechanics — an alternative to the probabilistic Copenhagen interpretation that remains the mainstream view.

Matter waves

De Broglie's thesis extended to matter the wave–particle duality that Einstein had proposed for light, associating with every particle a wavelength inversely proportional to its momentum. The idea was quickly vindicated by electron-diffraction experiments and became foundational to wave mechanics, directly influencing Schrödinger's formulation.

The pilot wave and the double solution

At the 1927 Solvay Conference, de Broglie presented a pilot-wave interpretation, in which particles are real entities guided by an associated physical wave — a causal picture in which quantum outcomes are not irreducibly random. Faced with strong criticism, he set the approach aside for some years.

After David Bohm independently revived a causal, hidden-variable interpretation in 1952, de Broglie returned to the programme, developing it further as his theory of the double solution. In this later work he collaborated closely with his assistant Jean Pierre Vigier, who went on to become a leading proponent of a stochastic, causal interpretation of quantum mechanics in his own right. This lineage — de Broglie, Bohm, Vigier — is the principal alternative tradition to the Copenhagen interpretation, and much of the work catalogued on this wiki descends from it.

Legacy

De Broglie was a member and later Perpetual Secretary of the French Academy of Sciences. The Fondation Louis de Broglie was established in his honour, and its journal, Annales de la Fondation Louis de Broglie, remains an important venue for foundational and dissident work in physics; a number of papers catalogued on this wiki were published there.
