William P. Harrison, Jr. (born 1929) is an American engineer associated with the Engineering Fundamentals Division of the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech) in Blacksburg, Virginia. He is known for his analysis of the permanent magnet motor devised by inventor Howard R. Johnson.
Biography
Harrison worked at the Engineering Fundamentals Division of the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in Blacksburg, Virginia. Together with associates at the institute, he carried out computer analysis of Howard R. Johnson's permanent magnet motor system.
Work
Harrison studied the permanent magnet motor associated with the patents of Howard R. Johnson, a device that its proponents claimed could produce continuous rotary motion using the fields of permanent magnets. Working with associates at Virginia Polytechnic Institute, Harrison used computer analysis to model the magnetic forces within the motor, examining the interactions between the poles of the armature magnet and the stator magnets, as well as the effects of magnet spacing and field strength on the system's behavior.
In November and December 1979, Harrison presented a paper on this subject at the UNSTAR Conference on Long-Term Energy Resource held in Montreal, Canada, entitled "The Permanent Magnet Motor", co-attributed with Howard R. Johnson.
