Charles F. "Chuck" Gallo (born 1935) is an American physicist based in Lake Elmo, Minnesota. He is president and founder of Superconix, Inc., a research and development company, and is known for his work modeling the rotation of spiral galaxies using classical Newtonian gravity without invoking Dark matter.
Biography
Gallo is a physicist whose career has spanned applied research in superconductors, materials science and astrophysics. He founded and directs Superconix, Inc., a research and development laboratory in Lake Elmo, Minnesota. Much of his published astronomical work has been carried out in collaboration with James Q. Feng of Superconix, Inc.
Work
Gallo's research addresses the rotation of spiral galaxies. Working with James Q. Feng, he developed thin-disk gravitational models that seek to reproduce the observed flat rotation curves of spiral galaxies by balancing Newtonian gravitational and centrifugal forces within a rotating disk, rather than assuming a spherically symmetric halo of unseen matter. Their models numerically solve for the mass distribution required to match a measured rotation curve, and conclude that the flat rotation profiles correspond to mass density that decreases approximately exponentially from the galactic center, with relatively more ordinary baryonic mass in the cooler outer regions of a galaxy.
Gallo and Feng argue that describing a rotating disk galaxy with a spherically symmetric mass model can lead to erroneous conclusions, and they present their disk-based analysis as an alternative to the hypothesis of large amounts of non-baryonic dark matter. Related work by Gallo has also proposed a spiral galaxy model incorporating an axial plasma or gas vortex.
