Yuri N. Keilman (April 15, 1932 – August 20, 2024) was a Russian-American theoretical physicist known for his work on classical theoretical physics, classical electrodynamics and the theory of elementary particles. He proposed a nonsingular ("regular") formulation of classical electrodynamics intended to describe particles without the singularities of the conventional theory.
Biography
Keilman graduated in theoretical physics in Russia in 1966 and pursued theoretical physics independently. He later emigrated to the United States, settling in Oregon and subsequently in North Dakota. He lived in Valley City, North Dakota, and later in Fargo, North Dakota, where he died on August 20, 2024, at the age of 92.
Scientific contributions
Keilman worked chiefly on the foundations of classical electrodynamics (CED) and its application to the structure of elementary particles. In 1982 he reported a nonsingular particle solution within classical electrodynamics, which he intended as a replacement for the conventional singular (1/r) solution. He subsequently developed solutions that he associated with light particles.
His program, which he termed "extended" or "regular" classical electrodynamics, proposed that, in addition to the transverse electromagnetic waves that carry energy and momentum, there exist longitudinal ("dummy") waves that carry no energy or momentum but influence particles through boundary conditions. He applied these ideas to questions of mass, gravity, special relativity and the classical interpretation of quantum phenomena such as de Broglie waves and the Bohr atomic model. His paper "The Basic Principles of Classical Electrodynamics" appeared in Physics Essays (Vol. 16, pp. 390–397, 2003), and his work "In-Depth Development of Classical Electrodynamics" was published in Progress in Physics (2008). He was a prolific contributor to the General Science Journal, publishing dozens of papers between 2002 and 2018.
Keilman's views were part of the dissident/alternative-physics tradition and were not accepted within mainstream physics.
