Steve Ludington is an American geologist and Geologist Emeritus with the United States Geological Survey (USGS), specializing in petrology, volcanology, mineral deposit controls, and mineral-resource assessment.
Biography
Ludington earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Stanford University and both Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees from the University of Colorado. He joined the United States Geological Survey in 1974 and retired from full-time work in 2012, continuing thereafter as a Geologist Emeritus at the Geology, Minerals, Energy, and Geophysics Science Center in Menlo Park, California. He resides in Palo Alto, California.
Work
Ludington's research focuses on economic geology, granite petrology, and the assessment of undiscovered mineral resources. His specializations include petrology, volcanology, mineral deposit controls, and mineral-resource assessment, with particular attention to porphyry copper deposits and highly evolved rhyolites. He has contributed to probabilistic mineral resource assessments across western North America, Central America and the Caribbean, the Tethys region, Central Asia, and East and Southeast Asia. Such assessments synthesize available geological information to estimate the distribution of undiscovered mineral deposits in the Earth's crust. He has been affiliated with the Society of Economic Geologists and has published extensively in the journal Economic Geology.
