Kevin Martin Harkess is an English electronics engineer and independent physics researcher based in Basingstoke, Hampshire, United Kingdom. He holds a BSc (Hons) degree in physics and is the author of the 2003 book Wisp Unification Theory: Particles of Nothingness, in which he sets out an alternative model of gravity, relativity and the unification of physics.

Biography

Harkess lives in Basingstoke, Hampshire, and works as an electronics engineer. He developed an early interest in the fundamentals of physics, seeking to understand not only how physical processes work but why. By his own account, an absorption in developing an energy theory disrupted his college studies, and it was only some fifteen years later, after seeing the word "fractal" on a book cover in a public library, that he returned to the subject and conceived the idea that became his Wisp Unification Theory. He subsequently spent about a decade developing the theory.

Outside of his scientific interests, Harkess served for eight years as a local councillor for the Brighton Hill South ward in Basingstoke.

Scientific contributions

Harkess is known for his Wisp Unification Theory, which he first published in 2003 and continued to develop thereafter. The theory proposes a medium-based, mechanical picture of physics in which forces and matter interact through what he terms "wisps," and offers an account of how gravity arises. Harkess presents the theory as an alternative to special relativity, arguing that Newtonian space and time are retained while special relativity is reinterpreted; on this basis he also discusses phenomena such as dark matter around galaxies. The work is self-described as "almost the theory of everything" and is presented as an independent, non-mainstream contribution to theoretical physics.
