Abhijit Biswas is a researcher who, together with Krishnan R. S. Mani, developed an alternative formulation of relativity that they call the "Remodeled Relativity Theory". He is listed in The Worldwide List of Dissident Scientists.

Work

Biswas and Mani published "Remodeled Relativity Theory" in the journal Physics Essays (Vol. 20, Issue 2, 2007), and posted a version to the arXiv preprint server. The authors state that their approach retains only those principles of Einstein's relativity that they regard as experimentally proven, and builds on a generalized law for spinning and rotational motions intended for the precision computation of planetary and lunar orbits.

A central and non-standard claim of the theory is that the speed of light is not a universal constant but a variable whose magnitude is greater closer to massive celestial bodies. The authors present the conservation of energy and momentum as the most fundamental principles of their framework, and argue that it avoids what they describe as inconsistencies in Einstein's special and general relativity. These proposals lie outside the mainstream understanding of relativity, in which the local speed of light in vacuum is constant.

Biswas and Mani have published a series of related papers in physics journals, including work on limiting speed in nature and on proposed space experiments for general relativity. Both authors have been associated with the Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science in Kolkata.
