Bjørn Ursin Karlsen is a researcher known for proposing a mechanical, aether-style model of matter in which the universe is treated as a homogeneous, isotropic, elastic continuum. He is listed in The Worldwide List of Dissident Scientists.
Work
Karlsen is the author of the paper "Sketch of a Matter Model in an Elastic Universe" (1998), circulated through his personal website. In it he models physical matter as confined "disturbance energy" within an expanding elastic spatial continuum whose behaviour is governed by Navier's equation of motion from the classical mechanics of solids. This places his work within the tradition of modern aether and "luminiferous medium" theories, which attempt to derive physical phenomena from the deformation of a space-filling elastic medium rather than from standard relativistic field theory. His model lies outside the accepted framework of contemporary physics.
His paper has been cited in independent arXiv preprints on the continuum mechanics of space and aether models, indicating circulation of his ideas beyond the original directory listing.
