In The New Ether, Science and Speculation (ISBN 978-1-4389-6461-4), Lane argues that the Twin Paradox of Special Relativity has never been satisfactorily resolved, and holds that it can only be explained if the twins' motion is treated as motion relative to an ether that fills the vacuum, rather than as motion purely relative to each other. He presents quantum mechanics as a branch of the kinetic theory of gases in which the vacuum must be regarded as a material medium, and uses analogies to argue for these positions. These views lie outside the accepted framework of modern physics, in which special relativity does not require a material ether.
