Daniel M. Kirchmann is an author and independent theorist known for the "Luxon Theory," an alternative account of relativity and the nature of matter which he first set out in 1982. He is listed in The Worldwide List of Dissident Scientists.
Ideas
Kirchmann develops his ideas on his website tardyon.de. In the Luxon Theory he distinguishes two basic kinds of particle: "luxons," which always move at the speed of light in empty space (he identifies these with electromagnetic radiation, gluons and possibly gravitons), and "tardyons," ordinary massive particles such as protons and electrons that travel at speeds below light. He proposes that tardyons are composed of luxons, summarising the idea in the slogan "tardyons are luxons," and argues that this composition is the underlying cause of relativistic effects, of mass, and of the conservation of energy. In his formulation each fundamental particle is treated as having zero rest mass. These proposals lie outside the accepted framework of modern physics.
