David John Oates is an Australian author and researcher known for developing the concept of "Reverse Speech." He is listed in The Worldwide List of Dissident Scientists.
Reverse Speech
Oates proposes that while speaking, people simultaneously and unconsciously produce a second stream of communication that can be heard when a recording of their speech is played backwards. He argues that these reversed segments reveal hidden meanings reflecting the speaker's innermost thoughts, and he claims applications for the idea in fields such as psychotherapy, criminology and negotiation. He began this research in the mid-1980s in Australia, later worked in the United States, and has published books and audio material on the subject as well as appearing in numerous media interviews.
The idea has not been accepted by mainstream science. Linguists and skeptics regard Reverse Speech as pseudoscience, noting the absence of a testable theoretical basis and the subjective nature of the claimed reversed messages.
