Ferruccio Aprile is an Italian researcher, associated with the C.N.R. Istituto dei Materiali (Area della Ricerca di Roma, Monterotondo), known for proposing an alternative interpretation of two classic optical experiments used to test aspects of special relativity. He is listed in The Worldwide List of Dissident Scientists.
Work
In a paper published in Physics Essays (Volume 14, pages 124–131, 2001) titled "A Suggested Alternative to the Current Interpretation of the Fizeau and Ives–Stilwell Experiments," Aprile reinterprets the Fizeau effect using the classical electron theory of optics. He argues that the Ives–Stilwell experiment should not be regarded as a valid test of the transverse Doppler effect, and instead offers an explanation based on the longitudinal Doppler effect and the wave–corpuscle duality of light. This reinterpretation runs counter to the standard understanding, in which the Ives–Stilwell experiment is taken as a confirmation of relativistic time dilation.
