Munim M. Al-Rawi (died 1 November 2018) was an Iraqi consultant petroleum geologist who spent much of his career studying the regional geology and hydrocarbon systems of the Middle East. He founded the geological consultancy Carta Design Limited and was recognised as an expert on the petroleum geology of the region, particularly Iraq and the Zagros fold-thrust belt.
Biography
Al-Rawi earned a BSc in geology from the University of Baghdad and went on to obtain an MSc, a PhD and the Diploma of Imperial College (DIC) in petroleum geology from Imperial College London. He held academic appointments as a lecturer and assistant professor of petroleum geology at Kuwait University and at King Abdulaziz University in Saudi Arabia, and he served as a visiting professor at the United Arab Emirates University.
In the course of his professional career he worked as a consultant geologist with the Arab Petroleum Consultants in Kuwait and with Petroconsultants in Dublin and Geneva, before establishing his own consulting company, Carta Design Limited. He settled in Leixlip, County Kildare, Ireland, where he died on 1 November 2018.
Work
Al-Rawi's research centred on the regional petroleum geology of the Middle East, including the reservoir rocks, source rocks, seals and traps of the region's hydrocarbon systems. A particular focus of his work was the Zagros fold-thrust belt and the petroleum systems of Iraq. He published more than 60 research papers in local and international journals, and he wrote reviews and articles on subjects such as the geology of Iraq and the Kirkuk oilfield.
