Minsung Jang is a Korean astronomer whose research has focused on observational cosmology and high-energy astrophysics, in particular the study of gamma-ray burst afterglows. Jang carried out this work as a member of the Center for the Exploration of the Origin of the Universe (CEOU) in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Seoul National University in Seoul, Korea.
Biography
Jang was associated with the astronomy research group led by Myungshin Im at Seoul National University's Center for the Exploration of the Origin of the Universe. Within this group Jang participated in observational campaigns aimed at understanding the origin and evolution of the universe, working alongside collaborators in Korea, Japan and Taiwan.
Work
Jang's published research concerns the multi-wavelength observation and interpretation of gamma-ray burst afterglows. As a co-author of the 2014 study of GRB 120326A, Jang contributed to an analysis showing that a standard forward-shock model could not fully account for the observed X-ray and submillimetre emission, and that additional radiation from a reverse shock — modelled as synchrotron self-inverse-Compton emission — was required to explain the data. This work formed part of a broader international effort to characterise the physical conditions in gamma-ray burst afterglows through coordinated observations across the electromagnetic spectrum.
