Joe Sorge (Joseph A. Sorge) is an American physician, molecular biologist, entrepreneur and filmmaker who in recent years has turned to the foundations of Special Relativity. He is the host of the video series Ask Us Whatever, in which he argues that the one-way speed of light is not constant, that Einstein's clock-synchronization convention conceals that fact, and that experiment points to a universal or preferred frame of reference. He has presented this work in the CNPS livestream seminar series.

Biography

Sorge graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with B.S. degrees in biology and chemistry and took his M.D. at Harvard Medical School. He served a surgical residency at Brown University, trained as a post-doctoral fellow in molecular biology at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, and joined the research staff of the Scripps Clinic and Research Foundation, where he remains an adjunct member of the Research Institute.

In 1986 he founded the biotechnology company Stratagene, based in La Jolla, California, and served as its chairman and chief executive officer until 2007, when the company was acquired by Agilent Technologies.

Outside science he has worked in film and television. His directorial debut was the documentary Divorce Corp (2014), which prompted a family-law reform movement; he also executive-produced the sports films The Art of Flight and View from a Blue Moon and the comedy Working Moms.

His physics work is presented through Ask Us Whatever, a series that examines complicated topics in plain and often humorous language. A long sequence of its episodes is devoted to special relativity, working through time dilation, length contraction, the Lorentz transformations, Einstein synchronization, velocity addition, the twin paradox, the Michelson–Morley experiment and the Fizeau experiment.

Scientific contributions

Sorge's central claim is that the two-way (round-trip) speed of light is constant, as experiment shows, but that the one-way speed is not, and that this asymmetry has been hidden rather than disproved. On his account, Einstein's synchronization convention — setting distant clocks by assuming that light takes equal times to travel out and back — builds a velocity-dependent clock offset into every subsequent one-way measurement, so that the measurement can only ever return c. Measured against absolutely synchronized clocks, he argues, light travels at different speeds in different directions relative to a moving inertial frame.

He takes the Sagnac effect as the decisive evidence. Because the counter-propagating beams of a Sagnac device traverse the loop in opposite senses, the experiment measures genuinely one-way propagation rather than a round trip, and it yields a directional difference. Sorge argues that one-way light speeds in a frame moving at speed v are described by expressions of the form c/(1 ± v/c), that the Tangherlini transformations — which preserve absolute simultaneity — reproduce the Sagnac result exactly, and that the Lorentz transformations are simply the wrong tool for one-way measurements in a moving frame. He extends the argument to the linear (non-rotating) Sagnac configuration, where the same asymmetry appears without any rotation to appeal to.

From this he draws the conclusion he presented to the CNPS in 2024: that special relativity, taken to its own logical conclusion, requires a preferred inertial reference frame. In the argument he calls "there is no relativity in special relativity," he constructs round-trip clock comparisons in which the accumulated offsets depend on the absolute speed of the system through space rather than on relative velocity alone, so that the observed behaviour of clocks must be anchored to some universal frame K.

His second major line of work concerns light in moving refractive media, the subject of his 2026 CNPS talk. Fizeau's 1859 measurement of light through moving water gave a partial-drag result that matched neither full nor zero ether drag, and von Laue's 1907 derivation of it from Einstein's relativistic velocity-addition formula became the textbook proof of special relativity. Sorge argues that this is a case of confirmation bias, and offers a non-relativistic, molecular alternative in which the observed speed has two parts: a refractive term, c/(n ± w/c), describing propagation between the moving molecules of the medium, and a ballistic term in which the velocity of the emitting molecules adds linearly to the light they emit, as a bullet fired forward from a moving vehicle. The combined expression u = c/(n ± w/c) ± w reproduces von Laue's numbers for Fizeau's parameters while requiring neither length contraction nor Einstein synchronization — and, he argues, exposes a component of light speed imparted by the emitter that the relativistic treatment conceals.
