Dale M. Grimes (Dale Mills Grimes, born 1926) is an American electrical engineer and professor emeritus of electrical engineering at the Pennsylvania State University. He is listed in The Worldwide List of Dissident Scientists.
Career
Grimes earned BS and MS degrees in physics from Iowa State University and a PhD in electrical engineering from the University of Michigan in 1956. He remained at Michigan as a professor of electrical engineering, where he also directed the Electromagnetic Materials Laboratory, before later joining Pennsylvania State University, from which he retired as professor emeritus. His research interests include antenna analysis, the quality factor (Q) of electrically small antennas, and electromagnetic theory.
Ideas
With his son Craig A. Grimes he wrote The Electromagnetic Origin of Quantum Theory and Light (World Scientific, 1st ed. 1999; 2nd ed. 2004), which applies classical electromagnetic field theory to atomic phenomena. The authors postulate the nonlocality of eigenstate electrons and argue that a deterministic interpretation of quantum theory can be derived from classical electromagnetism by combining principles such as the standing energy of electrically small radiating volumes, power–frequency relationships in nonlinear systems, and modal-field directivity. This program is a minority position and departs from the standard probabilistic interpretation of quantum mechanics accepted by the physics mainstream.
