This article is about Vladimir B. Ginzburg, the Russian-American engineer and vortex theorist. He should not be confused with Vitaly L. Ginzburg (1916–2009), the Soviet physicist and 2003 Nobel laureate, who is a different person entirely.

Vladimir B. Ginzburg (born 6 June 1935 in Moscow) is a Russian-American mechanical engineer, inventor and independent theorist based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. In his professional career he became a leading authority on steel rolling technology, the author of standard reference works on flat rolling and the holder of more than sixty U.S. and foreign patents. In parallel he pursued, over some three decades, a revival and reconstruction of the aether and vortex tradition in physics, developing in turn his Spiral Field Theory, the relativistic torus and helix as the "prime elements of nature", the toryx and helyx, the 3-Dimensional Spiral String Theory (3D-SST) and finally the Universal Spacetime Theory (UST). This work, published in a series of books through his own Helicola Press and in papers in Speculations in Science and Technology, the Journal of New Energy and the Proceedings of the NPA, places him outside the mainstream programmes of the Standard Model and conventional string theory, which he regards as having taken a wrong turn away from the geometric, vortical picture of matter.

Biography

Ginzburg was born in Moscow, Russia, on 6 June 1935. He received an M.S. degree in mechanical engineering in 1961 and a Ph.D. in technical sciences in 1968. In 1974 he emigrated with his family to the United States, where his principal occupation became the development of computer models for the simulation of technological processes, in particular in the steel industry. He settled in Pittsburgh, long the centre of American steelmaking, and worked there as a consulting engineer; he is the author of numerous technical articles and the holder of over 60 U.S. and foreign patents.

By his own account the origin of his physical theory can be dated precisely. In December 1992, prompted by a remark of his son Gene about the hidden worlds contained within matter, and while looking at the night sky over Phoenix, Arizona, Ginzburg conceived of a multi-level spiral spacetime to which he gave the name helicola — a nested spiral path which he holds describes the motion of every celestial body. Pursuing the geometry of the helicola led him in 1993 to the spacetime element he calls the toryx, and from there to the whole subsequent development of his theory. He published his theoretical work under the Helicola Press imprint in Pittsburgh, alongside papers presented to the Natural Philosophy Alliance, and remained active as an author into the 2020s. His stated long-term aim has been to apply the theory to what he calls the genetic codes of the universe.

Scientific contributions

Ginzburg's physics is a modern continuation of the vortex tradition: the idea, older than the atom, that matter is not made of little balls but of motion — of circulation, whirl and spiral structure in an underlying medium. He should be read as proposing this picture, not as having established it.

He presents his own work as the fifth phase of a development running back some 2,600 years, through Greek natural philosophy, the Copernican revolution, the nineteenth-century theories of electromagnetism and the aether, and the atomic age. On his account the vortical conception was not refuted but abandoned prematurely, when relativity made the medium seem dispensable.

The theory was rebuilt several times across three decades, each version subsuming the last: the Spiral Field Theory of the late 1990s, in which mass and charge decrease with velocity and a zero-point-energy aether he calls the dynosphere unifies field, matter and medium; the relativistic torus and helix as "prime elements of nature" from 2004; the toryx and helyx — spacetime entities rather than fields in a medium — presented at book length in Prime Elements of Ordinary Matter, Dark Matter & Dark Energy (2006); the Three-Dimensional Spiral String Theory (3D-SST) from 2009, offered as an alternative to the Standard Model and to conventional string theory and requiring only three dimensions and time; and finally the Universal Spacetime Theory of 2015, in which matter, field, gravity, mass, charge and energy are held to be "merely various metamorphoses of polarized spacetime".

Two consequences recur throughout. Because the charges of interacting elements are treated as distributed along circles rather than concentrated at points, Ginzburg argues that the strong, superstrong (colour), gravitational and electric forces all follow from Coulomb's law — that there is only one force. And dark matter and dark energy become further metamorphoses of polarized spacetime rather than an undiscovered exotic substance, making the dark sector unrecognised structure in the aether-spacetime the theory already requires.

Steel rolling engineering

Independently of his theoretical work, Ginzburg is a recognised authority on the technology of rolling steel. His Steel-Rolling Technology: Theory and Practice (1989) and High-Quality Steel Rolling: Theory and Practice (1993) became standard references in the field, and he followed them with Flat Rolling Fundamentals (2000), Metallurgical Design of Flat Rolled Steels (2004) and the edited volume Flat-Rolled Steel Processes: Advanced Technologies (2009). Much of this work grew out of his development of computer models for the simulation of rolling and other technological processes, and it is reflected in his portfolio of more than sixty U.S. and foreign patents on rolling mill equipment and process control.
