Janusz Wojciech Grabowski (April 9, 1937 – January 20, 2022) was a Polish-Canadian theoretical physicist and petroleum-reservoir specialist. Trained in theoretical and mathematical physics at the Jagiellonian University in Kraków, Poland, he later spent most of his career in Canada, where he worked in the oil and gas industry as an expert in the numerical simulation of hydrocarbon reservoirs.
Biography
Grabowski was born on April 9, 1937 in Hrycewicze, Poland. He graduated from the Jagiellonian University in Kraków in 1959 and earned his Ph.D. in theoretical and mathematical physics from the same university in 1964. After completing his doctorate he worked at the Institute of Nuclear Physics in Kraków.
In 1970 he emigrated to Canada, where he settled and spent the remainder of his career. He held senior research and consulting positions with a number of energy and technology firms, including Gulf Canada Resources Ltd., Cantera Energy Ltd., Tomotechnology Inc., Teknica Petroleum Services Ltd., ARC AITF and Technology and Research Inc. From 2011 he worked as an independent consultant. Alongside his industrial work he taught at the university level, at both introductory and advanced levels. His professional activities took him to numerous countries, including Poland, the United States, Indonesia, Venezuela, Trinidad, Libya, Russia, Denmark, Malaysia and Australia. He maintained a long-standing interest in metaphysics.
Grabowski died on January 20, 2022 at the Invermere & District Hospital in British Columbia, Canada, at the age of 84.
Work
Grabowski specialized in the numerical simulation of oil and gas reservoirs and in the modelling of reservoir exploration and production. He authored or co-authored about 40 scientific publications on the exploitation of oil and gas, and he presented his work internationally at scientific conferences and to business organizations.
